Slurries and Non-Newtonian Fluids

Flow characteristics such as velocity and pressure drop have a dependence on fluid properties. Slurry systems with settling solids and non-settling slurry systems both require special consideration to accurately model system operation as the viscosity becomes non-Newtonian. In the case of settling solids, the local velocity is critical as this must be above the threshold set by the slurry’s deposition velocity. Non-settling slurries can be modeled with Power Law, Bingham Plastic or Homogeneous Scale-Up correlations and will thus behave differently than common Newtonian fluids. Non-settling, non-Newtonian fluid modeling is part of the standard AFT Fathom and AFT Impulse (for waterhammer) packages. AFT Fathom and AFT Impulse can model settling solid systems with the Settling Slurry add-on module, and the standard software packages are equipped to handle non-settling applications.
