Platinum Pipe Award Winners Announced!

Now in its 10th year, the AFT Platinum Pipe Award recognizes excellence in piping and ducting system modeling using AFT software.

We are pleased to congratulate the winners of the 2014 AFT Platinum Pipe Award! For the first time this year, we have had a tie in one of the categories.

 

Use of Software Features and Model Creativity

Winner: Andy Fazel, Kiewit Power Engineers, Lenexa, Kansas, USA

Facility Location: Brayton Point Generating Station, Somerset, Massachusetts, USA

Software: AFT Fathom

An existing service water system contained 9 pumps, each at different flow rates and pressures to supply cooling water to 13 heat exchangers in 4 different coal power units. The system was redesigned to supply more cooling water using only 4 new pumps, while retaining the ability to use the existing pumps during outages in the new system. Multiple converging new and old systems made the model a bit messy, but using AFT Fathom, Mr. Fazel changed pipe colors and used annotations to denote which pipes supplied which systems, and which pipes were old and new. The Notes fields within the pipe and junction elements were used to keep track of drawing numbers, field collected roughness data, and loss components included. Valve throttling was used to adjust flow to different coolers.

Correlation to Test/Field Data

Winner: Jeremiah Osborn, TruStile Doors LLC, Denver, Colorado USA

Facility Location: TruStile Doors manufacturing facility, Northwood, Iowa, USA

Software: AFT Arrow

AFT Arrow was used to model three dust collection systems at a door manufacturing facility. These dust collection systems are essential to ensure employee safety and are an OSHA requirement in the wood processing industry. Dust collection is necessary to prevent explosions and to prevent long term eye and respiratory disease. Mr. Osborn compared predictions from the three models to field measured data of the air flow and agreement ranged from 1-12%.

Software: AFT Fathom

An AFT Fathom model was developed of a Coke Oven Gas (COG) flushing liquor cooling system. Lowering the gas temperature from primary COG coolers increases the efficiency of the COG cleaning/cooling process and improves the quality of the by-products. The model was used to design improvements and additions to the existing COG cleaning system. The model output was used to validate the design and operational requirements of the new system.

Facility Location: Data Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA

Software: AFT Fathom

AFT Fathom was used to correlate to physical results seen in the field rather that numerical data. When engineers tested cooling water storage tanks for an emergency ride through scenario, one tank experienced unexpected negative pressure and failed. Engineers suspected the cause to be certain valves not opening correctly, but were not able to re run any field tests that might damage the system further. They used an AFT Fathom model to determine which valve closures would result in the system failures they observed in the field. They were thus able to identify and fix the problems which were difficult to recognize visually because of the orientation of components in the system. A similar problem was encountered when recharging the tanks, and the model was used again to identify a valve opening issue that caused a tank to overpressurize and trigger relief valves.

Facility Location: Colonial Pipeline and BP tank farm, Carteret, New Jersey, USA

Software: AFT Impulse

A pipeline runs from a pumping station to separately owned tanks. Both parties wanted to ensure safety of their own systems under waterhammer transient events. Solutions found by one party created unacceptable risk to the pipeline. Standard AFT Impulse capabilities were crucial in allowing URS to consider multiple solutions that would reduce risk on both sides. New relief valve feature ended up being the key to their final solution. The ability to run models in steady-state was useful to determine valve coefficients. Graph results required by the client were able to be produced directly by AFT Impulse.

Facility Location: Woodbridge Energy Center, New Jersey, USA

Software: AFT Impulse

A previously created AFT Fathom model was imported into AFT Impulse for the waterhammer transient analysis of a power plant condenser cooling water system. The plant is a combined cycle, natural gas power plant that produces 725MW for the city of Woodbridge, New Jersey. AFT Impulse capabilities such as Scenario Manager and extensive graphing features saved time and helped with understanding the system's reaction to transient events. The model lay out contains colored pipes and had 46 scenarios.
