Applied Flow Technology (AFT) announces Duke Energy and Hatch Mott MacDonald as the winners of the 2011 Platinum Pipe Award, recognizing excellence in piping and ducting system modeling using AFT Software.

Colorado Springs, CO – At the end of the third quarter of each year, Applied Flow Technology releases a call for entries from its customers to put their best projects forward in competition for the Annual Platinum Pipe Award. Out of many, two entries stood out as winners for 2011: Duke Energy and Hatch Mott MacDonald. Two AFT software licenses will be awarded for each winning entry: one to the company who owns the software license used to develop the entered model and one to the individual making the winning entry.

Duke Energy won in the category of Correlation to Field/Test Data for their submission “Nuclear Power Station Service Water Pump NPSH Hydraulic Model Using AFT Fathom” Because Nuclear Service Water systems are safety-critical, it is essential to accurately understand how the system works under varying operating conditions and under Design Basis Accident conditions. Using AFT Fathom, Duke Energy was able to accurately model potential pressure recovery after cleaning the pipes, which had corroded. For more detail on Duke Energy’s winning submission, click here.

Hatch Mott MacDonald’s entry, “Hydraulic Analysis of a Dry Fire Line Piping Network for a Twin Tunnel Subway Design Project Using AFT Fathom” was awarded the winner for Model Creativity/Appearance. A hydraulic model of the DFL piping network was created in AFT Fathom to study the pressure drop in the system by regulating the input pressure at grade and output pressure at the farthest set of fire valves in the tunnels. While both 2011 Platinum Pipe Award winners used AFT Fathom, the contest is open to users of all AFT Software products: Fathom, Arrow, Impulse, Mercury and Titan. The call for entries for the 2012 Platinum Pipe Awards will be released this summer.
