FAQ
How does Engineering Utility Suite compare to AFT’s system modeling software, like AFT Fathom or AFT Arrow?
Engineering Utility Suite, as the name implies, is a collection of eight utilities particularly useful to the piping and thermal systems engineer. These include compressible and incompressible pipe sizing utilities, friction factor calculator, heat transfer coefficient calculator, nozzle/orifice/venturi sizer, Reynolds number calculator, two-phase flow mapper and a unit converter.
Can the single line pipe sizing utilities be used instead of Fathom or Arrow?
For cases where you need to size a single flow path of constant size based on static conditions of flow, pressure, etc., yes. The single line sizing utilities do not calculate networks or include the extensive modeling capabilities of system components that Fathom and Arrow include, such as pumps, compressors, valves, etc.
What heat transfer coefficients may be calculated?
Forced convection for both internal and external flow, natural convection and condensation.
Can I size a nozzle, orifice or venturi for liquid and gas flow?
Yes, the Nozzle, Orifice & Venturi Sizer handles both liquid and gas flow. Additionally, you size the component based on one of three selectable unknowns; throat ID, pressure drop or flow rate.
What are the limits of two-phase flow calculation using the two-phase flow mapper?
The two-phase flow mapper does not calculate two-phase flow, rather, as the name implies, it develops a map of the two-phase flow regions. Using your input for pipe dimensions and liquid and gas properties, it will develop and display a map indicating where you will have dispersed, bubble, churn, annular or slug flow as a function of liquid and gas velocity.
